4. Fundamentals of Periodontal Instrumentation and Advanced Root Instrumentation

The practical instrumentation text. This is the one you'll physically use in pre-clinic and clinic while learning scaler and curette technique, adaptation, and angulation. Many students find it the most-referenced book of first year.

Three mistakes that cost students money

Buying the wrong edition

This is the most common and most expensive error. Dental hygiene texts revise every 3-5 years, and page numbers, chapter order, and case studies all shift. If your instructor says "read chapter 14," an older edition may not line up. Always match the ISBN-13 on your syllabus, not just the title and author.

Buying used when the course needs an access code
